Happy Birthday to me

Thursday night saw me get very little in the way of sleep and as the clock struck midnight I became another year older, Happy Birthday to me. It didn’t get off to a great start, 04:30 and I was in a lot of pain so I rung for some Oramorph (thankfully they had switched the OxyNorm to Oramorph so I wasn’t too much like a zombie anymore). As the nurse came across she must have glanced down at the drain bottle and said that it was full, which explained the increase in pain. Basically the fluid had been filling up in the joint, she switched the bottles over and then started the suction, we both heard the fluid draining from within my knee and I could literally feel it deflating like a balloon. It was extremely painful but thankfully short lived, after it was draining freely again it just went back to its usual stinging self.

Mum and Dad had brought my cards in the day before so I sat and opened them over breakfast. Although it’s not the best place to spend your Birthday it does create a welcome distraction from what’s going on. I started managing my drain and catheter, keeping an eye on levels and calling for them to be emptied to avoid another 04:30 performance. Unfortunately the lack of sleep plagued my day, I was fighting constantly to keep my eyes open.

My day mostly consisted of trying to write my blog post and monitor Facebook, when my eyes allowed me of course. Facebook and all my friends and family were a little life saver yesterday, I had many Birthday wishes and support, which meant a great deal to me and was very much appreciated. I know it sounds Cliche but I’m going to say it anyway, it really does help you through these rough days knowing that there is such support behind you from friends and family, it certainly gave me a lift yesterday.

When Mum and Dad came in they were originally going to treat me to a Costa Toffee Cream Cooler and Tiffin. As much as I love the Tiffin my guilt kicked in about my waistline so I only had the Cooler, which was lovely. It was around this time I was loosing it with a male HCA (Health Care Assistant). I had already met him first thing in the morning when The catheter needed to be emptied, he said he couldn’t do it and had to get someone else. This time it was over the drain bottle again, to cut an extremely long story short this guy didn’t have a clue. He was asking me questions that I had no answers too like where did they get the bottles from? how long did they last? could it wait for the night staff to do it? He was just flapping around until eventually after a lot of hard work he managed to change it over. I’ve never thought about asking this question to anyone I have met on the Wards before, but of him I have to ask, why do they keep him in this job?

After the little fiasco with the HCA, Mum and Dad left and I went back to my blog post and Facebook. Yes, it really did take me all day to get it all done which gives you an idea of just how much I was having to fight my closing eyes. By about 23:00 everything was done and I was snuggling down for the night, as suspected I don’t think it took me too long to drop off to sleep after my head hit the pillow.

It’s not the first time I’ve been in Hospital for my Birthday, the way my life is it probably won’t be the last time either. Yet again Social Internet Media proved what a powerful and positive medium it is. Bringing people closer no matter how far away they are and being able to touch someone in a way that changes their bad day into a good one. Of course nothing matches seeing people in person which is where Mum and Dad came in. I consider myself very lucky to have had the best of both worlds and thank all the people who helped to make it a Happy Birthday.

  1. A very happy birthday to you. Sorry I’ve not been keeping up to date, been really busy with a few things and not even been posting myself. I didn’t even know you were in hospital so I’ll have a read back and catch up.

    Wishing you all the best

    • Thanks very much. I noticed you hadn’t done any posts for a while, glad to hear it’s because you’ve been busy and not because you have been unwell or anything. I’ll keep an eye out for your next post and look forward to hearing what you’ve been up to.

      Take care :)
